De son enfance passée à Nice, Jean-Flavien Piquemal a gardé l’attrait puissant pour la lumière, les couleurs, les gens.

« Quand j’ai compris que chaque matin je reverrais cette lumière, je ne pouvais croire à mon bonheur » dira Henri Matisse quand il s’installe à Nice. Jean-Flavien, lui, à la manière d’un peintre, tente aussi de capter la lumière, y compris dans le regard des êtres qu’il photographie.

Eclectique, cet artiste l’est définitivement. Cinéphile, mélomane, tchatcheur impénitent, il part à la rencontre d’images dans les rues des villes qu’il a la chance de traverser. Car c’est bien la rue, avec ses vibrations et ses rythmes saccadés, son peuple bigarré et effréné, ses couleurs saturées et ses ombres profondes, qui l’intéresse avant tout. 

« Là où il y a de la lumière, il y a nécessairement de l’ombre, là où il y a de l’ombre, il y a nécessairement de la lumière. » Cette citation tirée du roman 1Q84 de Haruki Murakami exprime assez bien l’intention de cet artiste qui tente d’éduquer notre regard à percevoir les ambivalences, la complexité, la multi dimensionnalité de la réalité.

Il a reçu en mars 2024 à Vienne le Grand Prix du Leica InternationalStreet Photography Contest.

From his childhood spent in Nice, Jean-Flavien Piquemal retained a powerful attraction for light, colors and people.

“When I understood that every morning I would see this light again, I could not believe in my happiness” said Henri Matisse when he moved to Nice. Jean-Flavien, he, like a painter, also tries to capture the light, including in the gaze of the beings he photographs.

Eclectic, this artist is definitely. Cinephile, music lover, unrepentant chatterbox, he goes to encounter images in the streets of the cities he is lucky enough to cross. Because it is the street, with its vibrations and its jerky rhythms, its colorful and frantic people, its saturated colors and its deep shadows, which interests him above all.

“Where there is light there must be shadow, where there is shadow there must be light. This quote from the novel 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami expresses quite well the intention of this artist who tries to educate our gaze to perceive the ambivalences, the complexity, the multidimensionality of reality.

In March 2024 in Vienna he received the Grand Prix of the Leica International Street Photography Contest.
